Follow the Reader A Girl Scout Family Reading Project

In a society in which illiteracy remains a prevalent issue, the Follow the Reader bilingual family literacy series is designed to promote a love for reading among girls and their families. Designed for ages 5-11, the series content is based on the five objectives of the White House literacy initiative No Child Left Behind: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

GirlSports Basics

The GirlSports program develops lifelong health and fitness habits. A sports-readiness kit for Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts teaches the basics of motor skills and agility, throwing, catching, volleying, batting, and more through a variety of activities.

GirlSports Fit & Fun

Fit & Fun, a component of the Girl Scouts' GirlSports initiative aimed at girls' ages 8 to 11, has 10 different skill sets activity cards that focus on fair play, cooperation, and skill progression.

Girl Scouts Against Smoking

This series of colorful anti-smoking booklets provides age-appropriate information on the dangers of tobacco and interactive activities that focus on the skills needed to make positive lifestyle choices.

Hometown History

The History Channel, in collaboration with Girl Scouts of the USA, designed this exciting community program that links Girls Scouts with senior citizens and local historical organizations for fun, educational activities. The project is sponsored by The History Channel and your local cable operator. Hometown History gives Girl Scouts a chance to explore their own communities through oral, architectural, and neighborhood history. This is a participation patch program. The patches and participation certificates are at no cost and are awarded by The History Channel. In the Zone

The In the Zone: Living Drug Free series is a dynamic substance-abuse prevention resource. The program gives girls a chance to speak and listen, to reflect and evaluate, to belong and participate, to create and build, and to succeed and grow in self-esteem. The activities provided inspire leadership, strong values, social conscience and conviction about each girl's own potential and self-worth - qualities that help girls grow strong. The program is collaboration between Girl Scouts of the USA and the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy's National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign about substance abuse among young people.

Let's Get Movin'!

Let's Get Movin' includes two age-appropriate books to help girls cope with their feelings and experiences during a move. It's designed to help girls become more comfortable with a new community, new culture and new friends. It's full of fun-filled activities and exercises that will help ease fears about moving while encouraging girls to express their innermost feelings about relocating. This program helps girls with everything they need to get comfortable in a new home and community.

Ms. President

The White House Project, an organization that is changing the way people think about women in leadership roles, worked with Girl Scouts of the USA to develop the Ms. President Patch. This is a participation patch that Girl Scouts can get when they take time to celebrate those women who have paved the way in social and political reform, as well as to learn about those who are on the front-lines of government today.

Our Own Troop’s Badge and Your Own Interest Project Patches

Our Own Troop’s Badge and Your Own Interest Project Patches give Girl Scouts a chance to explore other subjects not covered by existing badges and Interest Project Patches. These badges/Interest Project Patches are unique because they are created by the troop/girls’ interests and give everyone involved a chance to discover, lead and take action! For a successful Our Own Troop’s Badge or Your Own Interest Project Patch, the troop/girls should work on other Girl Scout Badges or Interest Project Patches before attempting Our Own Troop’s Badge or Your Own Interest Project Patch. Read the description in the Junior Girl Scout Badge book or Interest Project Patches for Girls 11-17 book to begin.

Council approval must be received before any work is done on the requirements developed by the girls or girl. Work already completed prior to approval should not be counted toward any requirements of the
badge/interest project patch.

Troops must submit Our Own Troop’s Badge/Your Own Interest Project Patch Approval Application form and will receive status of approval two weeks after submission. Upon completion of the Badge/Interest Project
Patch, troop/girl will have to complete the evaluation and return it to the Program Department or drop off at the Council shop when placing your order for the blank Badge/Interest Project patches.

Staying Safe for Girls

Staying Safe for Girls was created with input from girls and is a component of PAVE the Way (Project Anti-Violence Education), a national Girl Scout violence-intervention initiative funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service. This program uses age appropriate activities, language and approaches in each of the activity books.

Strong Bones, Strong Girls

The Strong Bones, Strong Girls project for Junior Girl Scouts is the result of a national collaboration between Girl Scouts of the USA and the National Bone Health Campaign. Osteoporosis, or brittle bones, is a major public health threat for 44 million Americans, 80 percent who are women. The Strong Bones, Strong Girls program targets girls ages 9 to 12, a crucial time to educate them about building and maintaining strong bones.

uniquely Me!

Created in 2002 by Girl Scouts of the USA and Unilever to address the important issue of low self-esteem among adolescent and preadolescent girls, this multi-faceted program is offered through selected local Girl Scout councils. Three booklets containing creative, age-appropriate resources and activities were designed in English and Spanish for staff and adult volunteers to facilitate girl-centered activities. The books, in conjunction with the uniquely ME! section of the STUDIO 2B Web site, help girls discover the importance of challenging themselves, how to develop healthy coping skills, what to look for in a friend, how to evaluate media influences, and ways to make a difference in the lives of others.

Volkssporting

The GSUSA-American Volkssport Association (AVA) Master Program Patch, developed jointly by Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Volkssport Association, encourages a fit lifestyle by making exercising outdoors fun and easy.

Water Drop

The Water Drop Patch Project was developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Girl Scout Council of Nation's Capital. The program will encourage girls to make a difference in their communities by becoming environmental stewards.
