Daisy Day at Camp (Daisy Girl Scouts)

Take this opportunity to visit CWP and learn about camping opportunities when you bridge to Brownie Girl Scouts! You will enjoy “First Time Camper” activities like making s’mores, learning how to build a fire, and hitting the trails to explore CWP’s beauty.
When: Saturday, April 19, 2008, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. FULL, registration closed.

Cost: $6 per girl and (Safety-Wise adults $1for site fee).

Girl Scout Night with the New Orleans Blaze

An Evening at The National World War II Museum

The National World War II Museum is hosting a special evening for Junior Girl Scouts to tour the museum's exhibits, explore the history and lessons of D-Day, and learn about teamwork and leadership through creative and challenging games and activities. Girl Scouts will earn their United We Stand Junior badge.

Resident Camp Open House at CWP (Girl Scouts & their parents/guardians)

The camp open house is a great opportunity for girls and their parents/guardians to explore camp, visit the camp sites, and receive information before resident camp begins.

Notes: No registration required. Please remember that exploring camp means "WALKING." Wear comfortable shoes (no sandals or flip flops) and casual clothing. Tours will not be conducted during summer sessions or check in!

Troops are invited visit the Parkway Partners Program Teaching Greenhouse in New Orleans on the Saturday before Mother’s Day for a mini workshop about plants and flowers. Girls will pot a “special gift” to take home to Mom.

Cabela’s Outdoor Scout Challenge

 

Girl Scout Troops will compete against other Girl Scout Troops.  Boy Scout Troops will compete against other Boy Scout Troops. Challenges include GPS plotting and compass reading, tent raising, treasure seeking, map reading, knot tying and accuracy skills.

Challenges will consist of:

GPS Plotting and Compass Reading – Troops will be given a GPS and compass to find their way.  The troop that gets there the most direct will win a GPS unit for their troop and earn 25 points.

The Tent Raising – All members of the troop will be blind folded but one.  The troop that can get the tent up the fastest wins the tent along with earning 25 points.

Find the Treasure – Using a metal detector the troop that discovers the most treasure within a specified time period will win a Metal Detector along with earning 25 points.

Map Reading – The Troop will be given a detailed topographic map and will be given a 10 question map reading test on locating towns, historic sites, fishing access points, etc, that they will need to find and answer.  Troops will earn 5 points per correct answer, for a total of 50 points possible.

Accuracy Skills – Every member of the troop will be given a fishing rod to cast toward a ring target.  The team with the highest score will earn 25 points along with a rod combo.

Knot Tying – All materials will be provided for your troop to tie knots that can suspend an object.  Object is a secret until the day of the event.  Troop that can master this challenge on or before time allowed will earn 50 points.

 

Prize list: Awards will be given to the 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place troops.

  • Prizes given out for selected event as stated above.

All participating troops will be presented with a Certificate of Honor for completing in the 1st Cabela’s Outdoor Scout Challenge.

Each Troop will have their own designated area to set up a pop-up tent, chairs, and lunch on the side parking lot.  All troops will receive a troop discount the day of the event.

TIMED To Explore Engineering - Huey P. Long Bridge Widening Project

(Astronomy program follows this program from 2-3 p.m.)

 

This program introduces girls to local projects and the engineers who create these structures, giving them an understanding of how and why the Huey P. Long bridge is being rebuilt. Additionally, the activities fulfill Engineering 101 and Bridge Building requirements of the Junior Girl Scouts’ Science in Action Badge, as well as coincide with some requirements for the Architecture and Environmental Design Interest Project.

TIMED to Learn is a public outreach initiative by the Louisiana TIMED Program. The Louisiana TIMED Program is the single largest transportation program in state history. The $5 billion improvement program consists of 16 infrastructure projects across the state of Louisiana, including the Huey P. Long Bridge Widening Project. TIMED to Learn introduces youth to the fields of construction, engineering and transportation through hands-on activities and games.

Who: Designed for Girl Scouts ages 11-17, but all who are interested are welcome 

When: Saturday, May 24, 2008, 1 – 2 p.m. Astronomy program is 2 - 3 p.m.

Where:  Public viewing area on the levee near the Huey P. Long Bridge.

Past events

Theatre Badge Workshop

Junior Girl Scouts, join the Louisiana Renaissance Festival cast at one of their actual cast training workshops where you will cover all of the items needed for the Theater badge. Activities include practicing with props (bring a mask made prior to woorkshop), charades, voice projection, facial techniques, etc. For the "see it live" activity, each Girl Scout will receive a free ticket to the Louisiana Renaissance Festival.

The Renissance Festival cast specializes in “Improve,” which is acting without a script and cast members receive more than 50 hours of training each year, many of them ‘On Stage’ each year during the festival for more than 100 hours.

Fall Product Sale Kick Off Event at the Aquarium of the Americas

Girl Scout troops, kick off the Fall Product Sale by spending a day at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas!  The Aquarium offers enhanced exhibits and a wonderful aquatic animal collection. Visit new animals and old favorites, too—including their beloved penguins and sea otters Buck and Emma!

Tulane University Green Wave Athletics

The Tulane University Athletics Department has put together some great opportunities for Girl Scouts to be involved in sports. If your troop would like to present the colors before an upcoming event, contact Marie at (504) 865-5357 for more information. The Tulane University Cheerleaders will conduct a Cheer Clinic from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. for those that register and participants will have a chance to perform at the game. If cheerleading, is not your thing, just come and enjoy the game and cheer on the Green Wave as you take advantage of the discounted ticket offer!

University of New Orleans Privateer Athletics

UNO has come out with its 2007 Women's Volleyball schedule and it looks like an exciting season! Plan with your troop to attend any of the exciting games and receive a special Girl Scout troop ticket price and recognition at the game! One special night has been designated specifically "Girl Scout Nihgt: so come cheer on the Privateers and participate in a free post game clinic. Get your troop/group even more involved and perform a flag ceremony or sing the National Anthem at one of the upcoming games! For more information, contact Adam Stowe at (504) 280-3981.

Cost: Volleyball - $2 for girls and adults (if ordered prior to day of game) $4 for girls and $6 for adults on game day.

Night at the Opera

The New Orleans Opera Association has offered tickets to Girl Scout troops to attend the dress rehearsal for three upcoming operas, Faust, Rigoletto, and West Side Story. Each of these operas are very different in their presentation styles and will offer girls a unique insight into the beauty of the world of opera. As a mandatory prerequisite for the performances the Council is offering an opera orientation that will allow the girls and leaders to know what to expect when attending any of the opera performances. Girls will be oriented on proper dress, etiquette, and a synopsis of the show that they will be attending. If a girl has attended a previous Council-sponsored orientation, it is not necessary for her to repeat this. She may review the synopsis with her leader instead. We hope to see you there as the red curtain rises!

Fall Festival Celebrating Juliette Low's Birthday

(All Girl Scouts)

Come and enjoy a day at camp participating in activities to help celebrate our Girl Scout founder’s birthday! The U.S. Marines will be on hand collecting unwrapped toys for their Toys for Tots Drive. Troops are encouraged to participate in this voluntary service project by bringing an unwrapped toy(s) to the Fall Festival.

New Orleans Hornets Scrapbook Night

The New Orleans Hornets are holding a Girl Scout Scrapbook Night prior to the San Antonio Spurs game with a post-game meet and greet with Hugo and the Honeybees. Besides all of the fun, the girls will earn a commemorative Hornets Fun Patch.

Participants will be performing a cheer at half time. Destination Station

Are you interested in traveling to new places and encountering new adventures? Silver Award Workshop

The Silver Award is the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn. The requirements help you build skills, explore careers, improve leadership capabilities and provide a chance at self-improvement. Let seasoned advisors guide you through what's required to accomplish these goals and receive the application for the Silver Award. Final reports will be due March 14, 2008 for a 2008 ceremony.

Gold Award Workshop

A young woman described the Girl Scout Gold Award as being "what you really want to be remembered for" in Girl Scouting. Find out how to obtain the highest award in Girl Scouts. Be part of the 10 percent of Girl Scouts who have accepted the challenges to go for the gold. Final reports are due March 14, 2008 to receive the award for a 2008 ceremony.

Me & My Pal "Dad & Me"  (Brownie - Senior Girl Scouts)

Girls! Bring your dad, grandfather, uncle, or other appropriate adult male to camp for a weekend. Show them what a terrific camper you are! Together you will enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, and more!

Cost: $35 per girl; $25 per adult

Explore SCUBA

Interested in SCUBA? Certified SCUBA Instructors will teach girls the basics of SCUBA diving. Lessons will be held in an indoor, heated pool. Wear a swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel and a mask if you have one (not required).

Who: For girls 11-17 (must be accompanied by a leader/advisor). No tagalongs.

When: Saturday, September 22, 2007 OR December 8, 2007, 10:45 a.m. - 1 p.m. (Program starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m.)

Nursing Exploration Day - Lakeview Regional Medical Center

Lakeview Regional Medical Center sponsors an annual Girl Scout Nursing Exploration Day to give girls the opportunity to learn about the field of nursing by participating in a mock code blue and mock surgical procedure, taking vital signs, practicing infection control/hand washing, and giving newborn baby care. Enjoy a tour of the hospital and some behind-the-scenes glimpses of what it's like to be a nurse. A nursing patch will be given at the end of the program if all prior program requirements are fulfilled.

Who: Junior Girl Scouts; no siblings or additional family members due to limited space.
When: Saturday, January 19, 2008, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Arbor Day & Family Camping (All Girl Scouts)

Come and enjoy a day at camp with the whole family! You will participate in Arbor Day events and a family picnic!
When: Saturday, February 9, 2008, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Where: Camp Whispering Pines, Independence, LA
Cost: $5 per person. If camping overnight, cost is $4 per person.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Tulane

Proclaimed a national day by Congress each year since 1987, the National Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrated each February and recognizes the progress of girls and women in sports and the benefits that sports and fitness activities can bring to the lives of all girls and women. 

The Tulane University Athletics Department invites Girl Scouts to join them and other youth for the Tulane Women's basketball game vs. Marshall on Sunday, February 10, at 2 p.m. as well as pre-game activities, including a one-mile run in the morning followed by activities with Tulane student athletes.

What: Tulane celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

When: Sunday, February 10, 2008. Game is at 2 p.m. One-mile run and pre-game activities time TBA.

Where: Fogelman Arena (basketball stadium on Freret Drive) on the Tulane University campus. One-mile run and other event activities will take place in the LBC Quad, which is the student union on McAlister Drive.

Cost: $4 for game (youth), $8 for adults. Event admission is free. Free T-shirts and bracelets will be passed out at basketball game.

Arbor Day at Camp Covington (Junior - Senior Girl Scouts)

Come and help replant our beloved Camp Covington. Now that the remains from Hurricane Katrina have been cleaned up, come out and help us replant our forest. Bring your troop or family to help celebrate the beauty of Camp Covington.  New - a presentation about the importance of the longleaf pine ecosystem by three Alabama experts!

Nursing Exploration Day - Oschner Medical Center

Oschner Medical Center invites New Orleans area Junior Girl Scouts to attend a Nursing Exploration Day where girls will participate in interactive rotations to learn about various disciplines of nursing including: emergency care, newborn baby care, and surgery.

New Orleans Hornets Dance Clinic

Perform a dance during the New Orleans Hornets basketball game, Friday, April 6!  A 3-hour dance clinic with the New Orleans Hornets Honeybees is open for girls ages 5 to 17.  Girls will receive a Girl Scout Dance clinic T-shirt, pair of pom poms, patch, and four tickets to the game (cost varies based on location of seats).

When: Friday, April 6. Check-in from 12:30 to 1 p.m., dance clinic from 1-4 p.m. Game (Hornets vs. Golden State Warriors) is at 7 p.m.

Cost: clinic package $60-$172 depending on seat location. Game tickets also available without clinic.
