The following are program opportunities offered by a business or organization to Girl Scouts in southeast Louisiana. These programs may offer an educational and/or special discounted rate.

Please make your plans early since programs fill up fast, and once the maximum capacity of the event has been reached, registration will close. This is for ALL events in Girl Scouting. 

Arts and Education

Science Discovery Day at Ochsner

Ochsner Health System, Academic Division invites Junior through Senior Girl Scouts to attend Science Discovery Day at Ochsner.  The day is tailored for Junior Girl Scouts to earn the Science Discovery Badge upon completion of the interactive activities planned.

Notes: Only Safety-Wise adults are to be in attendance and no tagalongs. Girls should dress in comfortable clothes and pack a brown bag lunch. A confirmation packet will be sent out prior to the event. The Science Discovery Badge will be presented at the end of the program!

Collinswood School Museum

The Collinswood Museum has been around since 1876 and was originally a one room school house. This museum exhibits the history of the Ponchatoula strawberry industry, Native American artifacts from 10,000 years ago, history of the Louisiana cypress industry, Civil War, railroad, early farming and household artifacts.

Longue Vue House and Gardens Brownie Plant Try-It Workshop

Come visit the Discovery Garden for a day of exploration, discovery and fun. Brownie Girl Scouts will learn about plants and earn the Plant Try-It.

Kenner's Rivertown Museums

Kenner's Rivertown offers museums, exhibits, theatres, restaurants, and free parking. Check special show times for: Repertory Theatre, Planetarium, Mardi Gras Museum, Children's Castle, and Observatory.

Alpha Chi Sigma Chemistry Fun Day

Discover the magical world of chemistry and the wild wonders of matter! Come and learn all about chemistry with the Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity at Loyola University of New Orleans for Chemistry Fun Day! This is a great opportunity to see the world of chemical surprises!

Wild Things Youth Art Competition

Artists ages 5 through 18 are invited to capture in drawings or paintings the plants, animals, and landscapes of area National Wildlife Refuges for the annual Wild Things art competition. The competition highlights the incredible natural richness of southeast Louisiana through art, and encourages area youth to learn more about our natural heritage.

Art will be judged in two categories, drawing (pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, or pastel), and painting (oils, watercolors, tempera, and acrylics). Artists may submit one entry in each of the two categories. Artwork must be original, recent work, and must not be computer generated. Art will be judged in four age groups: 5-8, 9-11, 12-14, and 15-18.
A panel of judges will select first, second, and third place winners in each category and age group, plus a Best of Show winner. Prizes will be awarded to all winners, plus all entrants will receive a participant ribbon.

New Orleans ArtWorks at the New Orleans School of GlassWorks & Printmaking Studio

The New Orleans School of GlassWorks and Printmaking Studio is a historic 1800's brick building on Magazine Street. The GlassWorks is the south's largest contemporary glass working, metal sculpting, printmaking, and bookbinding facility. This also houses the New Orleans ArtWorks Gallery where visitors are given the opportunity to view educational exhibitions by Louisiana craftsmen and visiting international guest artisans. Come and join in on a glassblowing and/or Sea Creatures & Egyptian glass bead making demonstrations, and other hands-on demonstrations in print-making and paper-engineering.

Destrehan Plantation

The Destrehan Plantation was built in 1787 from hand hewn and sanded lumber. This age-old plantation at one time was seized by the Union Army, abandoned to vandals until it was restored again with 17th and 18th century antiques. Come and take a tour of the past and learn from Louisiana's rich plantation history.

StressLessGirls

StressLessGirls provides two different activity kits for girls with information about massage (Massage Away the Stress) or aromatherapy (Soak Away the Stress). These program activity kits are designed to teach girls healthier living and eliminate stress. These kits include information about the history, how massage and aromatherapy works and benefits them, who does it and what it can do for the body. Troops who wish to purchase the kits will get an interactive DVD, handouts for the girls to take home to refer to in the future and materials to make a beautiful, natural product to use or give as a gift!

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art

Located in the cultural heart of the South, New Orleans, the museum is home to the largest and most comprehensive collection of Southern art in the world, and a unique and innovative destination to “See the South.” Be sure to inquire about designing special activities that contribute to earning a badge!

Louisiana Children's Museum

Find something new and fun to do each time you visit the Louisiana Children's Museum. Explore and experience hands-on fun, engaging exhibits and exciting programs - all designed with curious kids (and grown-ups) in mind. Pilot a towboat down the Mighty Mississippi. Lift 500 pounds. Hoist yourself up a wall. Trap your shadow. Anchor the evening news. Create a masterful work of art and much more! Learning has never been more fun!

New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) & The Sculpture Garden in City Park

Come and enjoy the New Orleans Museum of Art, the city's oldest, fine arts institution that has on exhibit, more than 40,000 objects. Come discover the museum of continuing exhibits, interpretations, and preservation of art from ancient to modern times. The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden has reopened to the public. Come relax and walk along the meandering footpaths in the garden, which is home of 53 sculptures! For upcoming exhibits, go to www.noma.org.

St. George Observatory

This observatory is where troops can go and view the sky! Hands on observing of planets, planetary nebulae, galaxies, asteroids, comets, and moons. Learn about telescope use, procedure for optical observing, and all about the universe in general! Come see the largest solar refractor in the southern part of the United States.

When: All visits are by appointment only. Open Sunset - 12 p.m. Friday & Saturday. Special accommodations can be made to accommodate groups for a day visit for the purpose of observing the sun, its photosphere, sun spots, and all else in the visible solar sprectrum.

Stennis Space Center

StenniSphere, the visitor center at NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, offers ongoing programs in aviation and space exploration. Junior Girl Scouts can meet five of the 10 requirements for the Aerospace Badge by visiting the International Space Station exhibit and seeing how astronauts live and work in space.

Lightkeepers Overnight Program at the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum

Experience a time when men and women of strength and determination endured hurricanes, wars, and other hardships to provide safety and sanctuary for mariners along America’s waterways. During the 19th Century, the position of lightkeeper was one of the few leadership occupations open to women. The Lightkeepers Overnight Program uses the historic dwelling from the Tchefuncte River Light Station, the exhibits of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum, and unique hands on activities to bring this history to life. Overnights start at 8 pm at night and end at 8 am the following morning and include educational programs, hands on activities, tours of the lightkeepers cottage and museum, and indoor accommodations for sleeping bags. Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses Outdoor Cook Workshop

This badge program provides the girls with an opportunity to experience first-hand, cooking in an early 19th century kitchen. The troop will learn about the history of food and how it was once prepared.

Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses Local Lore Workshop

This badge program is designed to give the girls the opportunity to learn about the history of their city and discover how the city has changed through the years.

Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses Architecture Workshop

This badge program give the troop the opportunity to learn about architecture in their hometown. They will discover different styles of buildings, how styles have changed over time, and why certain buildings were designed as they were.

Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses Yarn and Fabric Arts Workshop

This badge program give the troop the opportunity to learn about textiles, including how they were made, who made them and how demand necessitated a change in the textile arts.

Posh Paint Pub (Pottery & Jewelry)

Painting pottery is a great opportunity to create a one-of -a-kind project and build self-esteem! Take a field trip to have fun and learn about pottery. A troop/group may participate in a 1 hour or 1 ½ hour session to paint pottery. Posh Paint Pub also offers jewelry making. Beading necklaces is also a fun relaxing way to entertain your troopers.

Who: Daisy - Senior Girl Scouts

When: Troop/groups may call to schedule an after school or Saturday session.
Where: Posh Paint Pub is located at 701 Metairie Road, Metairie, LA.

Cost: The $12.75 session includes painting instruction and firing of piece. The $14.75 session is a teaching on pottery from pouring molds, to greenware, to bisque, kiln operations and tour. The girls will also paint a piece of pottery. Cost for the jewelry-making session is $12.75 per person.

Nursing Exploration Day -Ochsner Medical Center

Oschner Medical Center invites New Orleans area Junior Girl Scouts to attend a Nursing Exploration Day where girls will participate in interactive rotations to learn about various disciplines of nursing including: emergency care, newborn baby care, and surgery.

Who: Junior Girl Scouts; no siblings or additional family members due to limited space.
When: Thursday, March 20, 2008, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Cost: $3 per girl

Ochsner Medical Center Healthy Living Presentation

Ochsner Medical and Elmwood Fitness Centers have teamed up to help you start your New Year off the healthy way, it will be up to you to follow that way the rest of the year. Join us for a fun and informative presentation of making a better you through eating habits, exercise, and other daily activities.

Nursing Exploration Day - Lakeview Regional Medical Center

Lakeview Regional Medical Center sponsors an annual Girl Scout Nursing Exploration Day to give girls the opportunity to learn about the field of nursing by participating in a mock code blue and mock surgical procedure, taking vital signs, practicing infection control/hand washing, and giving newborn baby care. Enjoy a tour of the hospital and some behind-the-scenes glimpses of what it's like to be a nurse. A nursing patch will be given at the end of the program if all prior program requirements are fulfilled.

Night at the Opera

The New Orleans Opera Association has offered tickets to Girl Scout troops to attend the dress rehearsal for three upcoming operas, Faust, Rigoletto, and West Side Story. Each of these operas are very different in their presentation styles and will offer girls a unique insight into the beauty of the world of opera. As a mandatory prerequisite for the performances the Council is offering an opera orientation that will allow the girls and leaders to know what to expect when attending any of the opera performances. Girls will be oriented on proper dress, etiquette, and a synopsis of the show that they will be attending. If a girl has attended a previous Council-sponsored orientation, it is not necessary for her to repeat this. She may review the synopsis with her leader instead. We hope to see you there as the red curtain rises!

Moscow Ballet

The Moscow Ballet is offering members of the Girl Scout Council of Southeast Louisiana a special discounted ticket rate to its annual engagement at the Saenger Theatre in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The original Russian Nutcracker is a dazzling production of this holiday tradition, featuring 300 costumes and 20 hand painted backdrops, creating a magical storybook setting.
