Camp Whispering Pines' aquatic facilities include: swimming pool, 23 acre Timber Lake, Tangipahoa River, and Indian Creek. Timber Lake has sites for fishing, rowboating and canoeing. Fishing is allowed from the barge and on the water's edge at Timber Lake - bring your own poles and bait. Troops request use of pool and boats on camp reservation form.
A currently certified lifeguard must be present and supervise all water activities that involve water above the knees of the participants.
An individual currently certified in Small Craft Safety must supervise all boating activities. A lifeguard and an appropriate boating instructor (two people) are necessary if an individual certified in Small Craft Safety is not secured. Current certifications issued by the YMCA and Red Cross are recognized by the Council. In addition to the lifeguard or individual certified in Small Craft Safety, the troop provides one watcher for every 10 swimmers or boaters.
When in a boat, all persons must wear personal flotation devices.
Lifeguards are secured for boating and swimming. The troop pays the guard, at the time of the activity, at the rate of $10 per hour per troop. Troops must provide adult watchers at the ratio of one adult to every 10 girls
The Camp Whispering Pines pool is open for use April through September (excluding special program weekends/ weeks). There is a $10 increase per troop camping fee during these months to help with the cost of chemicals and upkeep. It is left up to the lifeguard's discretion to determine if it is too cool for swimming.
Troops sign up for swim times with the Ranger when you arrive at camp. NO EXCEPTIONS. You may choose to utilize the pool for more than one swim time and/or night swims if Council can secure a lifeguard. Check with Ranger upon arrival at camp.
Certified guards for pool activities are secured for weekends in April, May, June, July, August and September.
Troops pay guards at the rate of $10 per hour, per troop (effective 8/1/06). The money is given directly to the guard at the time of the water activity. When a water activity is scheduled, the troop is obligated to pay the guard unless cancellation is made one month prior to camping trip.
Troops must provide adult watchers at the ratio of one adult to every 10 girls.
Rowboats are available on the shore of Timber Lake, below Misty Lake unit, year round. Rowboating is an ideal activity for Brownies.
ALL BROWNIE GIRL SCOUTS MUST HAVE AN ADULT ABOARD CRAFT UNLESS OTHERWISE INSTRUCTED BY LIFEGUARD.
There is a $3 charge per boat, per day at Camp Whispering Pines. Boat, paddles and lifejackets are included in this price. Current lifeguard certification must be presented to the Camp Ranger prior to use if providing own lifeguard. Lifejackets must be worn by ALL entering a canoe, kayak or rowboat. Review Safety-Wise Boating Activities checkpoints. Observe and calculate weight capacity of boat before boarding.
Paddles and lifejackets are available in the canoeing shed. All boating activities are scheduled for 1 hour unless otherwise reserved with Ranger at check-in. If you are utilizing a Council provided guard, you must pay the lifeguard directly at the rate of $10 per hour/per troop.
Canoeing takes place at the Canoe Cove on Timber Lake. The Canoe Cove is protected from all winds except strong northern gusts, allowing for calm instructional conditions.
You will sign up for boating times with the Ranger when you arrive at camp. NO EXCEPTIONS. It is left up to the discretion of the certified adult if girls are ready to progress to the next level of paddling. Small Craft Safety Canoeing Instructors are placed by the Council. The troop leader pays the guard at the time of the activity at the rate of $10 per hour, per troop.
There are no bathroom facilities at Canoe Cove. It takes l/2 hour to hike from most units to the Cove. Carry a snack and water. Progression is important in boating activities. ALL BROWNIE GIRL SCOUTS MUST HAVE AN ADULT ABOARD CRAFT UNLESS OTHERWISE INSTRUCTED BY LIFEGUARD. Young Brownies should rowboat, while more experienced, older Brownies may be ready for a canoeing experience. Kayaks are available for avid paddlers. Council lifeguards and Small Craft Safety instructors are certified in kayaking skills.
The sandbar of the Tangipahoa River is a favorite hike for campers. Girls enjoy exploring the open sandbar for favorite rocks and animal prints. Troops may build campfires on the sandbar or may overnight under the stars.
Recently opened for "wet" activities, girls may now enter the river with lifeguards for wading, canoeing and tubing. The Tangipahoa River at Camp Whispering Pines has a strong current and a lifeguard must be present. Camp does not staff lifeguards for the river.
Indian Creek feeds Timber Lake and then meanders alongside the Nature Trail as girls hike to the river.
