Girl Scouts to set up "camp" inside Lakeside Shopping Center

Local Girl Scouts recruit adults, girls at mock campsite

September 2006

Canoeing at CampWhat better way to recruit new Girl Scouts and adult leaders than to invite them to a Girl Scout campsite - in the comfort of air conditioning? On Saturday, September 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., representatives from the Girl Scout Council of Southeast Louisiana will set up a mock campsite inside Lakeside Shopping Center where they hope to recruit girls as well as adult volunteers for the new school year.

"Camping is a favorite activity of many GiIrl Scouts," said event coordinator Carrie Thomas, a marketing and membership executive on staff at the council. "Some of their fondest memories revolve around their first camping trip. Camping is not only fun, but it's a great approach to learning new skills, building self confidence along the way."

However, according to Thomas, Girl Scouting isn't limited to activities in the outdoors. This fall Girl Scouts will attend the opera, try scuba, take part in gymnastics, cheerleading, and volleyball clinics, travel to the bayou for a science research weekend at the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON), and participate in numerous community service activities throughout their local communities.

During the event at Lakeside, girls will get a taste of Girl Scouting as they make friendship bracelets and learn a Girl Scout song while accompanying adults can find out more about the Girl Scout program.

All Girl Scout programs are based on four goals - helping girls develop to their full potential, relate to others, gain values, and learn to contribute to the improvement of society.

The Girl Scout program age levels are: Daisy Girl Scouts -Kindergarten; Brownie Girl Scouts-grades 1-3; Junior Girl Scouts-grades 4-6; Cadette Girl Scouts-grades 6-9; and Senior Girl Scouts-grades 9-12. Studio 2B is a new exciting delivery system for bringing Girl Scouting to girls ages 11 to 17.

There are many ways to volunteer for the Girl Scouts, in addition to serving as a troop leader or assistant leader. Free training and support is provided by council staff and local, experienced volunteers. Annual membership is $10 for both girls and adults.

Lakeside Shopping Center is located at 3301 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, and the Girl Scout campsite will be set up near the information desk.
