Council Annual Meeting & Adult Recognition Breakfast- March 15

The final and historic Annual Meeting & Adult Recognition breakfast for the Girl Scout Council of Southeast Louisiana is set for Saturday, March 15, in the Council Service Center's Training Center. At this time, Southeast Louisiana Council delegates will vote on the Council Realignment Committees' report and recommendations which include articles of incorporation, Council (Girl Scouts Louisiana East) by-laws, the new combined board of directors, and cover other business matters pertinent to the Southeast Louisiana council and the new realigned Council, which goes into effect on the first day of its existence, April 1, 2008.

Delegate Caucuses have been scheduled for February 19, 20, and 21 across the Council (see calendar for times and locations).

The Annual meeting (from  10 a.m. to 12 p.m.) is being preceded by the Adult Recognition breakfast from 8:30 - 10 a.m. The menu includes scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage links, breakfast potatoes, biscuits, croissants/danish/muffins, fresh fruit salad, and orange juice, and costs $10, with the exception of those being honored. Please RSVP by completing the breakfast reservation form and paying by March 7. Seating is limited.

Realignment News

Here's the latest from the Council Realignment Committee's last meeting (2/7/08):

  • The temporary corporate office for Girl Scouts Louisiana East is 841 S. Clearview Parkway, New Orleans, LA  70121.  The temporary satellite office is 545 Colonial Drive, Baton Rouge, LA  70806.
  • All existing council services will continue without interruption.
     
  • Interested volunteers who would like to be a part of the Planning Committee for the joint celebration are asked to contact the Committee co-chairs, Jackie Daniels at JacSDan@aol.com and Perry Sholes at perrysholes@aol.com. You may also contact Anne Trappey at atrappey@forteandtablada.com.

Celebrate Black History Month

Girl Scouts have teamed with Amistad Research Center at Tulane to develop a new patch program in conjunction with Black History Month. Junior - Senior Girl Scouts are encouraged to learn about the Amistad and its role in the movement to abolish slavery. For more information click here.

Explore Engineering

Explore Engineering and the widening of the Huey P. Long bridge!  Girl Scouts and Timed to Learn have collaborated to create a free, one-hour program on Saturday, March 1, from 1 to 2 p.m. that introduces girls, ages 11 to 17, to local projects and the engineers who create these structures, giving them an understanding of how and why the Huey P. Long bridge is being rebuilt.

Additionally, the activities fulfill Engineering 101 and Bridge Building requirements of the Junior Girl Scouts’ Science in Action Badge, as well as coincide with some requirements for the Architecture and Environmental Design Interest Project.

To register, fill out an event registration form for a troop or individual and fax or mail to:  Girl Scout Council of Southeast Louisiana, 841 S. Clearview Parkway, New Orleans, LA 70121 / Fax:  (504) 733-8219 by the February 22 deadline. If the minimum number is not registered at that time, the event will be cancelled.

Girl Scout Legislative Day

Mark your calendars now for a trip to the Louisiana state legislature in Baton Rouge on Tuesday, May 20. Enjoy a day of government relations as you meet elected representatives and discuss with them exactly what you want your government to do in your community and what's important to today's girls.

Girls will get the opportunity to tour the Capitol, as well as learn how and why laws are created and changed. It's Girl Scout Day at the Louisiana Legislature!  More details will be available for this day as it gets closer.

GIRLfest registration deadline approaching

Space is limited and filling up quickly so don't delay in registering for GIRLfest 2008 on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at CWP. Be sure to bring your donations for the Troops Helping Troops care package drive. Cost to attend is $10 per girl and limited to a maximum capacity of 500.

Don't forget to sign up early since programs fill up fast. Just a few of the events include:

Night at the Opera orientation (March 1) and Rigoletto (March 12) & West Side Story (April 17) performances - Deadline for the opera orientation is February 16!

Ochsner Medical Nursing Exploration Day - Thursday, March 20. (Space is limited and filling up fast.)

Silver & Gold Award Workshops - Saturday, March 22, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. $2 per participant. Deadline: March 8.

City Park's Big Bass Rodeo & Fishtival - Saturday, March 29.

New Orleans Hornets Girl Scout Dance Clinic - Sunday, April 6, Check-in 12:30-1 p.m., dance clinic 1-4 p.m, game 7 p.m. For girls ages 5-17. Participants receive clinic T-shirt, pom poms, patch, four tickets to game. Cost varies based on seat location. Fax or mail registration form with payment by March 21.

Daisy Day at CWP - Saturday, April 19, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m., $6 per girl. Deadline: March 22.

An Evening at the National World War II Museum - Saturday, April 19, 6 - 10 p.m. Junior Girl Scouts. $10 per girl. Deadline: April 5.

Safe Sitter Babysitting course - Saturday, April 26, 8:45 a.m.- 4 p.m., Junior League headquarters, 4319 Carondelet, New Orleans. Sponsored by the Parenting Center at CHildren's Hospital. For girls 11-15. $35 per girl.

Youth Leadership Council Toastmaster's dinner - Thursday, May 8, 6-9 p.m., Council Service Center, $10 per Cadette/Senior. Deadline: April 25.

Mother's Day Garden Gift Workshop - Saturday, May 10, 10 - 11:30 a.m. Parkway Partners, New Orleans. $5 per girl. Deadline: April 25.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Early Bird discount available for resident camp

It pays to register early for resident camp! Mail in your registration by Monday, March 3 to receive an early bird discount! Applications accompanied by a $50 deposit, mailed and receipted in our office by March 3 will receive a 10 percent discount off of their total registration fee. Confirmation packets will be mailed by April 21, 2008.

Sessions begin June 8 and end July 18, and prices are $165 for a four-day session and $250 for a six-day session. Click here for session information, and more!

Girl Scout Global Citizen Essay Contest

GSUSA, in partnership with EF Educational Tours and Smithsonian Student Travel, is sponsoring the second annual Girl Scout Global Citizen Essay Contest.

Expense paid trips to Washington, DC, and Europe will be offered to 18 lucky winners. Please encourage girls, ages 12-17, to apply. Click here for application and contest rule. Contest deadline is 3/31.

The purpose of the Girl Scout Global Citizens Essay Contest is to help Girl Scouts reflect on the meaningful experiences they've had in Girl Scouting, and connect those experiences with the wider world.

Day Camp update

A meeting for all day camp directors has been scheduled for Saturday, March 29, at the Council Service Center at 10 a.m. Questions, contact the Program Department at (504) 733-8220, ext. 243.

Lunar Eclipse

Look at the moon on Wednesday, February 20, at 9 p.m. and observe a Lunar Eclipse. The earth will be between the sun and moon and the earth will cast its dark umbral shadow on the moon.  Naturally, this will occur only if the sky is clear.

Goodwill Good Turn

This year Goodwill Good Turn Day is Saturday, March 8. Donation bags and door hanger announcements are available for pick up at the Council. The announcement hangers are great to distribute along with the delivery of cookies! The list of stores participating in this spring clean is posted here!
